The Third Battalion Fiji Infantry Regiment (3FIR) commemorated its 84th anniversary this week with a route march, battalion parade, and Commanding Officer’s (CO’s) Hour.
It formally launched what its leadership declared the beginning of an annual tradition.
3FIR, known as the ‘Daimani Damudamu’ or Red Diamond, is a regular infantry battalion of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).

It was established in March and April 1942 during World War II, with approval granted on March 18 that year.
Historical records show the battalion’s first recruit, Oivo Acura assigned Regimental Number 4021 – was taken on strength at noon on March 26, 1942, with the battalion’s first headquarters established in Lautoka days later.
Commitments
This year’s commemoration, delayed several times due to national and RFMF commitments, included a visit by a 3FIR team to the battalion’s Honorary Colonel to extend birthday wishes.
The occasion was used to engage junior ranks directly during the CO’s Hour, reinforcing leadership and unit connection.
In closing remarks, all ranks were told the commemoration marked the start of a lasting tradition.
“Today marks the beginning of an enduring tradition, one that will see 3FIR Day commemorated for years to come,” the battalion said.
