China has gifted a Hongqi 'Red Flag' executive sedan to the Office of the President, marking what both sides described as another milestone in the long-standing bilateral relationship between Fiji and the People’s Republic of China.
At the handover ceremony, President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu acknowledged the donation and reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to the One China Policy, describing it as a cornerstone of cooperation between the two countries.

“The diplomatic partnership between the Republic of Fiji and the People’s Republic of China has remained resilient, successfully navigating various challenges and uncertainties over the years,” President Lalabalavu said.
He acknowledged China as a key development partner, citing cooperation across major sectors including health, agriculture, education and infrastructure.
The President highlighted joint efforts in combating malaria, assistance provided during the COVID-19 pandemic and the refurbishment in 2025 of part of the 97-year-old State House by China.
China’s Chargé d’Affaires ad interim to Fiji, Wang Yuan, said the donation symbolised the enduring friendship between the two nations.
“Fiji was the first Pacific Island country to establish diplomatic relations with China,” Mr Wang said.
“Our two countries, with a shared future, have always supported each other and deepened our friendship.”
He noted that Fiji and China marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations last year, during which President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu and Chinese President Xi Jinping exchanged congratulatory messages.
“A new chapter in our bilateral relations for the next 50 years is now opening,” Mr Wang said.
“The Chinese Embassy was honoured to support the refurbishment of part of the North Wing of State House last year, and today’s donation will further support the daily operations of the Office of the President while injecting new vitality into the friendship between our two countries.”
Mr Wang also highlighted the significance of the Hongqi H9 executive sedan, explaining that Hongqi — meaning “Red Flag” — is one of China’s most prestigious automobile brands.
Established in 1958, Hongqi is China’s first luxury vehicle brand and was developed through independent innovation. Its logo was personally inscribed by Chairman Mao Zedong.
The Hongqi H9 is known for its dignified design, advanced technology and high levels of comfort, and is commonly used by Chinese leaders for official state functions.
“As an outstanding example of China’s automobile industry, Hongqi has become China’s ‘business card’ in diplomatic engagements,” Mr Wang said.
He reaffirmed China’s commitment to sharing opportunities arising from its modernisation with Fiji and to supporting Fiji’s national development and the wellbeing of its people.
