Fiji Ports defends security after alleged $500,000 kava theft

Fiji Ports Authority Pte Limited (FPCL) says the security of Fiji's ports remains a top priority following concerns over the alleged theft of almost $500,000 worth of imported kava from inside a shipping container.

The alleged thefts occurred on three separate occasions between May and June this year, raising concerns about security and the integrity of operations at Fiji's ports.

The Fiji Sun first reported the allegations on July 28, prompting members of the public to share similar experiences of items allegedly stolen from shipping containers.

However, FPCL acting chief executive officer Suresh Prasad said the Suva and Lautoka ports operate under a comprehensive 24-hour security and surveillance system.

"Fiji Ports treats every report of cargo theft, tampering or unauthorised access with the utmost seriousness. Any allegation is subject to a thorough investigation to determine where and how the incident occurred," Mr Prasad said.
