FNU, UTOF partnership to unlock more than $200m in investment

More than $200 million in investment is set to flow into three major national development projects under a new partnership between Fiji National University (FNU) and the Unit Trust of Fiji (UTOF), with plans now entering the technical and feasibility stage.
The developments include world-class sporting facilities at FNU's Nasinu campus, student accommodation and sporting facilities at the Maritime School, and a proposed specialist private hospital in Nabua.
UTOF chairperson Lavinia Kaumaitotoya said the partnership was the result of about two years of discussions and planning between the two organisations.

She said the arrangement combined the strengths of both institutions, with FNU contributing land, existing facilities and technical expertise, while UTOF would provide investment and commercial expertise on behalf of its unit holders.
Specialist hospital planned
The proposed specialist private hospital in Nabua is expected to be the largest project under the partnership.
Ms Kaumaitotoya said the hospital would focus on specialist healthcare and complement Fiji's existing medical infrastructure.
She said the project would combine FNU's medical expertise, facilities, personnel and academic resources with UTOF's investment capacity.
A preliminary concept has already been presented to FNU and received unanimous support, although the hospital's final size and capacity are yet to be determined.
Student facilities planned
The Nasinu campus development is expected to deliver modern sporting facilities for students, staff, families and the wider community.
At the Maritime School, the project will include new student accommodation and sporting facilities, with the accommodation designed to cater for local, regional and maritime students.
The three developments will now undergo detailed technical assessments covering costing, design, structural requirements, medical equipment and regulatory approvals.
UTOF said construction could begin within 18 to 24 months, subject to approvals and completion of the required technical work.
