Manish Kumar, hailing from the outskirts of Labasa, has demonstrated remarkable determination and commitment in pursuing his educational goals. Despite growing up in a family that struggled financially, he never allowed these circumstances to hinder his dreams and ambitions.

Instead, he used his difficult upbringing as a source of motivation to strive for a better future for himself and his family.

Manish Kumar’s academic journey at the Fiji National University (FNU) culminated in his graduation with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), a significant accomplishment in the field of medicine. Additionally, his special recognition in 2022 through being a recipient of the Certificate of Excellence and Dean’s Honours award underscored his excellence in his chosen field of study.

“I chose this field of study as I feel I can contribute a lot to the medical fraternity, advocate for healthier lifestyles and early recognition of cancers and clinical conditions,” he shared.

Education

Kumar undertook his primary education at Saint Mary’s Primary School and Shri Guru Nanak Primary School. His high school education was completed at Shri Guru Nanak Secondary School, where he laid the foundation for his future academic success.

Upon completing high school, Manish Kumar pursued tertiary education at the Fiji National University, where he dedicated himself to the field of medicine by enrolling in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme.

His commitment and dedication to his studies were evident through the numerous awards he received, including the ASA & NZSA award for Highest Academic Achievement of Medical Student in Anesthesia in 2022 and RANZCOG Women’s Health Award.

“College was fun, I started the freshman years apprehensive, as I was taking baby steps into the university. We have cried, we have lived, and we have laughed our way through the COVID-19 pain. It hasn’t been easy, but it has been worth every minute as student life at the Fiji National University was awesome,” he said.

“I chose FNU as it is a prestigious university which has given rise to multiple talented doctors and health care professionals and focuses on skills and professional development. I am grateful to the Fiji National University as it helped me reach my full potential and be work force ready due to the compulsory practical component and I urge students out there to come to FNU.”

Career

Kumar, a dedicated and passionate healthcare professional, has reached a significant milestone as he completes his internship at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM) in Suva. His time at CWM has been marked by a deep passion for medicine and a commitment to fostering health awareness in his community, a goal that transcends the professional sphere and is deeply personal.

During his internship at CWM, Kumar immersed himself in the medical profession, working alongside fellow healthcare providers and gaining invaluable hands-on experience. His dedication and enthusiasm for patient care have made him a respected member of the medical team.

However, Kumar’s aspirations extended beyond the hospital walls. He envisions a community that is well-informed and proactive about their health, and he is determined to contribute to this vision.

“I have always believed that good health is a fundamental right,” says Kumar. “My experiences during my internship have reinforced my passion for healthcare, and I am committed to using my knowledge to create a healthier and more informed community.”

Furthermore, Kumar has set his sights on pursuing further studies in a specialised area of medicine. He believes that this additional education will equip him with the expertise needed to make a lasting impact on health awareness in his community.

“I view education as a powerful tool,” Kumar explains. “By pursuing further studies, I hope to gain the knowledge and skills required to effect positive change and contribute to the betterment of our society.”

Motivation

“I grew up in an extended family of six, which included my parents, my younger brother, grandmother and an aunt in Labasa who are very supportive,” Kumar said.

Moreover, the support of his loving extended family in Suva during the six years he spent away from his immediate family undoubtedly played a crucial role in his journey. Having a support system can make a significant difference when pursuing ambitious goals, and it’s clear that Manish Kumar had a network of people who believed in him and helped him along the way.

Kumar encouraged other students to approach their educational journey and life aspirations with a positive and driven mindset.

“I urge all students who are pursuing studies to always be enthusiastic, passionate and motivated when pursuing your goals as it will be the determining factor of your future”.

“I am deeply grateful for the transformative experience I’ve had at Fiji National University,” says Kumar.

“The university’s nurturing environment has allowed me to develop essential life skills, make friends from all walks of life, and step out of my comfort zone to grow as an individual.”
