Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School (MGM) has set their sight on winning the 2027 Fiji Finals girl’s title for the fourth consecutive year.

This was the gist of MGM head coach Wailiki Satakala’s interview with SUNsports after retaining the girl’s title at the National Stadium in Suva, last Saturday.

“It was a great performance this year in defending the girl’s title,” he said.

“We are now aiming to win the title for the fourth title next year. I’m being modest but I would say yes, definitely.

“Every year we’re chasing after somebody else’s legacy and creating our own at the same time. Maybe we’ll give it another shot if God’s will for us to win.”

Satakala said their athletics team was excited about winning the girl’s title for the third consecutive year.

“They (girls) themselves knew how much it took to get there and what to do on that third day.

“It motivated them even more knowing that there is a loss within the family of one of the athletes. That motivated them to keep going.

“We lost one of our mums last year and there is another one this year. You see that there is a black armband on them.

“We take this moment to pass on our condolences to the Ralaini family from Vunivaivai in Nakelo.”

Satakala said one of their key strategies that he implemented on the athletes was hard work.

“Nothing beats hard work. They understand what the concept is when you say hard work.

“They sacrifice everything that they have to forego and then to be able to come up with a victory,” he said.

Satakala also acknowledged the support of their supporters towards their athletics team.

“I think it starts with not so much fans but support in terms of funding from the Gujarati Education Society and on top of that they have our loyal teachers who go out of their way to provide for the kids every morning and evening.

“They have sacrificed a lot because they have a great team led by Mr. Prasad and I think everybody works in tandem to try and get the job done,” he added.
