Legge is interim Fijiana XV coach

The Vodafone Fijiana XV squad was named three days ago before the appointment of their interim head coach Mike Legge yesterday. 

Fiji Rugby Union head of high performance unit Nacani Cawanibuka made the official announcement at Rugby House. 

Legge will look after the team as they march into camp to prepare for the Wallaroos Test match in March and the Oceania test series in April which includes Tonga, Samoa and Japan. 

The head coach role has been left vacant by Ioan Cunningham who did not wish to renew his contract following the Women’s Rugby World Cup in England last year. 

It was advertised on December 31, 2025.

“His appointment ensures continuity within the programme and his previous experience with the coaching team for the Fijiana 15 at last year’s rugby World Cup for the women’s will ensure that there’s consistency in the headship of the team and coaching staff,” Cawanibuka said. 

Kele Leawere will assist Legge as the forwards coach while former Flying Fijians Josh Matavesi will look after the back line.

Matavesi will be supported by Tavaita Rowati as part of the backline coaching staff.

Ifereimi Rawaqa will focus on lineout and structures. 

Legge acknowledged FRU for his appointment and remains committed in his task to lead Fijiana to great heights.

“It’s about us now starting to build a momentum from the World Cup and move into, I guess what you can say the next steps for Fijiana rugby, which is obviously getting us into the top ten of the world rankings,” he said.

Legge is hopeful that a local female coach will lead the Fijiana XV team in the future.

Meanwhile, Namosi women’s rugby head coach Maraia Kasanita is set to join the coaching staff next week.
