Bula Festival contestant shares journey of resilience and self-discovery

A pilot-in-training with a private pilot’s licence, Fifita Bauleka is aiming to inspire the next generation while pursuing her dream of an aviation career.

The 25-year-old from Somosomo, Taveuni, is representing the Nadi Town Council at the week-long Bula Festival in Nadi, where she is advocating for climate change awareness and encouraging more iTaukei women to pursue their ambitions.

“You cannot build a nation on runways alone — you need people strong enough to stand on solid ground first. That is the work I have chosen,” Ms Bauleka said.

As part of the festival programme, contestants visited the Fiji Airways Hangar and the Fiji Airways Academy.

“I had the absolute privilege of joining my sash sisters on a visit to the Fiji Airways Hangar and the Fiji Airways Academy last week,” she said.

“As someone with a keen interest in pursuing an aviation career, I found it truly eye-opening. Gaining firsthand insight into the operations, innovation, and expertise behind Fiji’s national airline was both inspiring and motivating.

“It was a memorable experience that has further fuelled my passion for aviation and the opportunities it offers.”

Ms Bauleka also spoke candidly about overcoming personal challenges that affected her confidence and self-worth.

“While I am not proud of every moment during those difficult periods, I do not believe those moments define who I am,” she said.

She said entering the Bula Festival was not about proving herself to others.

“My decision to enter the Bula Festival was never about being a role model or proving anything to anyone; it was about finding myself again, rebuilding my confidence, and giving back to my community through a cause I believe in.

“To everyone who has shown me kindness, understanding, and support, thank you. As I continue this journey, my focus remains on personal growth, community service, and becoming a better version of myself — not for public approval, but for my own peace, purpose and happiness.”

The crowing will be held this Saturday night.
