Graduate balances studies while caring for bedridden grandmother

Balancing academic pressure with caregiving duties and family responsibilities, Tanzeel Ali graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Physics from the Fiji National University.

This certification proves that perseverance and sacrifice can overcome even the most demanding challenges.

Mr Ali travelled from Ba with his parents to attend his graduation ceremony in Suva, marking a milestone shaped by resilience and determination.

Behind his academic success lies a story of quiet struggle.

While pursuing his studies, Mr Ali cared for his bedridden grandmother for nearly a year and a half, an experience he described as both emotionally and physically demanding.

“It taught me patience, compassion and the true meaning of family,” he said.

At the same time, he carried the responsibilities of being the eldest son, helping his family prepare for his sister’s wedding while managing his studies and personal challenges.

The pressure often left him exhausted, but he remained focused on his goals.

“There were many moments when I felt overwhelmed, but I kept reminding myself why I started,” Mr Ali said.

Mr Ali had previously completed a degree in Secondary Education in Mathematics and Physics, but continuing into postgraduate studies came with increased expectations and hardships.

Through it all, he said the experience reshaped his understanding of success.

“Success is not only about intelligence, it is about perseverance, sacrifice, discipline and faith,” he said, adding that many struggles often go unseen.

Mr Ali credited his parents, family, lecturers and peers for supporting him throughout his journey, acknowledging their encouragement during his most difficult moments.

Now a postgraduate graduate, Mr Ali’s story stands as a reminder that behind every achievement is a journey of sacrifice and that determination can lead to success even in the face of hardship.
