Observing her husband’s dedication to study and legal work sparked Nazmeen Nisha’s interest in law.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Fiji’s Saweni Campus in Lautoka on April 17.

Originally from Nadi, Ms Nisha’s journey reflects perseverance and determination.

She began full-time studies in 2022 while balancing academic demands with her role as a wife and mother of three — Fatima, Muzzammil and Azmeel.

Ms Nisha is married to Mohammed Harif, a senior police officer and lawyer, whose academic and professional path inspired her.

She developed a strong interest in case law, criminal investigations and legal processes, particularly serious offences such as murder, sexual offences, fraud, assault and motor vehicle accidents.

Reflecting on her studies, Ms Nisha said she was most interested in how cases move through the legal system, especially the appeals process and how legal technicalities influence outcomes.

“It was not easy balancing family life, especially being the wife of a senior police officer, while managing my studies and caring for my children,” she said.

“However, with my husband’s support, I was able to complete my degree. He constantly encouraged me to push forward and never give up.”

She credited him for guiding her through moot preparation, assignments and examinations, strengthening her legal reasoning.

Ms Nisha said lawyers have a duty to uphold the rule of law, defend the Constitution and serve people equally, regardless of background or status.

She hopes to contribute through community service and pro bono work, particularly for marginalised and underrepresented groups.

“I am not here to make money, but to make a difference,” she said.

“When no one stands for the poor and vulnerable, I will. That is the duty of a lawyer.”

Mr Harif holds qualifications including a Bachelor of Arts in Management and Public Administration, a Bachelor of Laws, a Master of Arts in Human Resource Planning and Development, a Master of Business Administration, a Master’s in International Relations, and a Master of Laws. He is currently writing his PhD thesis in law.

Ms Nisha is pursuing a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice at the University of Fiji’s Samabula Campus and aims to enter the legal profession.
