A young man from Taveuni has made history in his family by becoming the first sibling to graduate from the Fiji National University, earning a Bachelor of Education in Agricultural Science (Secondary) yesterday.

Donasiano Waikula, 22, the second eldest of four siblings, described his journey as “full of setbacks,” especially during his Form Seven education journey in 2021.

“When the results came, I passed but I did not qualify for the Tertiary Education Loans Scheme, so I had to repeat,” he said.

To my brothers and all youth out there who wish to achieve something: don’t be afraid of failure. Accept it, learn from it, because failure makes you stronger.

Financial struggles made the journey even harder.

“I’m fortunate to have my parents supporting me,” he said.

“Even though they are just full-time farmers and didn’t have much, they managed to pay my tuition.”

Despite these obstacles, he refused to give up. He credited his faith in God, his family, and his own determination for keeping him focused.

“To my brothers and all youth out there who wish to achieve something: don’t be afraid of failure,” he said.

“Accept it, learn from it, because failure makes you stronger.”

He also paid tribute to the sacrifices of his family.

“My parents, my relatives, they all supported me financially and emotionally. Without them, I couldn’t have done this,” he said.

Reflecting on his success, he said: “I struggled, I failed before, but I never gave up. If I can do this, anyone can. Hard work, faith, and support from loved ones can make anything possible.”

His story is a reminder that perseverance, discipline, and belief in oneself can turn setbacks into triumphs and inspire others to reach for their dreams.
