At just 19 years old, Chance Waqatabu Wong has gone from the streets of Nadera to earning recognition in Japan, where he has been appointed a World Ambassador by Beppu City Hall.

Beppu City Hall, it is the municipal government office for Beppu, a famous hot spring city on Japan's Kyushu island.

The Cikobia teenager, who was raised with the support of his single mother and grandparents, describes the achievement as a testament to faith, perseverance and the opportunities that come from pursuing a dream.

Mr Wong left Fiji in September last year to study in Japan, driven by a passion for diplomacy and a desire to gain international experience. Since then, his journey has opened doors that have strengthened his ambition to one day serve Fiji on the global stage.

“As a young Fijian pursuing a career in diplomacy, I am passionate about contributing to stronger ties between Fiji and Japan,” Mr Wong said.

“I was fortunate to receive a tuition reduction scholarship, a monthly JASSO stipend, and an AP House Global Community Scholarship, which covers my dormitory rental fees.

“Coming from Sacred Heart College, this opportunity has truly been a blessing for both my family and me and I remain deeply grateful to my principal and teachers for their unwavering support throughout the rigorous application process.”

Mr Wong was appointed a World Ambassador last Thursday through an international programme run by Beppu City Hall, where youth representatives help promote cultural exchange and international understanding between Japan and the wider world.

He said the appointment had further strengthened his commitment to fostering cross-cultural understanding and international cooperation.

“My first semester, I was able to bridge the gap between international students and local residents of Beppu. For several months in volunteer work I never had imagined that I would receive such a prestigious honor from the city,” Mr Wong said.

“Japan has provided me with opportunities to participate in international business competitions, forums, and volunteer initiatives, allowing me to develop valuable skills and experiences.”

Despite the achievement, Mr Wong remains focused on an even bigger goal.

His dream is to one day serve as Fiji's Ambassador to Japan and eventually become Minister for Foreign Affairs.

“To work towards this goal, I actively seek opportunities that broaden my understanding of international relations and diplomacy,” he said.

“Most recently, I attended the fully funded 4th Pacific Islands Young Practitioners Forum in Tokyo, organised by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation.

“Experiences such as these have helped me develop a global mindset, engage with talented young leaders from around the world, and strengthen my commitment to serving Fiji and my community.”

Mr Wong credited his success to God and to his mother, whose resilience continues to inspire him.

“Firstly, I give all glory to God for His endless love, guidance, and mercies that are renewed every day,” he said.

“I would also like to acknowledge my mother, whose resilience and determination have been a constant source of inspiration.

“Despite many challenges, she continued to persevere and encouraged me to pursue my dreams without limitations — her own journey to Australia to undertake her PhD studies motivated me to pursue my educational aspirations in Japan.”
