Fiji has been placed under a tsunami watch following a powerful 8.2-magnitude earthquake that struck near the Philippines on Sunday morning.

The Mineral Resources Department's Seismology Section issued the tsunami watch at 11.37am, warning residents in low-lying coastal areas across Fiji to remain alert and take necessary precautions.

According to the advisory, the earthquake occurred about 40 kilometres north-northeast of General Santos City in the Philippines at a depth of 46 kilometres.

Authorities warned that all low-lying coastal areas in Fiji could experience strong and unusual currents, as well as unpredictable surges along shorelines.

The Seismology Section advised the public, particularly those living in coastal communities, to remain on standby for further updates.

"We advise the public and particularly all residents on low-lying coastal areas to take necessary precaution and be on standby and alert for the next available updates."

The advisory also warned that coastal waters could become hazardous.

"All low-lying coastal areas are to experience strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore."

Residents have been urged to monitor local media and official updates as authorities continue to assess the situation.

The Seismology Section said it would continue to closely monitor developments until the threat had passed.
