Rakshay Kumar, 22, was all smiles after graduating with a Bachelor of Information Technology from the University of Fiji on April 28.

He was one of the 316 students who received their certificates at the university’s Lautoka campus after successfully completing their respective programmes.

Living in Toge, Ba, which is located in the interior and a 50-minute drive away from the town, Mr Kumar had to wake up at 5am every day to travel all the way to Saweni where the university is located.

He would then return home at 7.30pm, take a shower, and study until 12.30am.

“I feel very excited that my hard work has finally paid off. Those sleepless nights were all worth it today,” Mr Kumar said.

His interest in Information Technology began when he was in high school.

“My careers and computer teacher, who was a graduate of the University of Fiji, encouraged me take I.T. That’s why I chose this course.

“I am mostly interested in graphic designing, so that’s what piqued my interest in I.T.,” he said.

Despite facing his own share of challenges while pursuing his studies, including connectivity issues during online classes Mr Kumar was still determined.

He plans to gain work experience before pursuing post-graduate studies.

“My advice to other aspiring Information technology students is that there will be struggles but do not be distracted and do what is right.”
