Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) will send a team to Vanuatu to assist with recovery efforts following the powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake that hit the nation on Tuesday.

Mr Rabuka said plans are also in place to repatriate Fijians living in Vanuatu if necessary.

A Fiji Airways aircraft has been placed on standby to facilitate evacuations, should the need arise.

Mr Rabuka confirmed that the RFMF team will remain in Vanuatu throughout the Christmas period to support ongoing relief operations.

The earthquake has claimed the lives of 14 people, injured around 200, and caused widespread destruction, which included houses collapsing, landslides blocking roads and vehicles damaged.

The Prime Minister emphasised that the deployment is part of Fiji's broader commitment to stand in solidarity with its neighbors during times of crisis, highlighting the country's dedication to assisting Vanuatu in its recovery.
