The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) says it “will not remain prisoners of its past,” unveiling a sweeping commitment to transparency, accountability and public trust-building as the country progresses through its national reconciliation process.

Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai acknowledged the public’s concerns and impatience with the pace of reconciliation and said the military fully understands the weight of its past actions.

“The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) acknowledges the concerns, sentiments, and growing impatience expressed by members of the public as the national reconciliation process progresses. The RFMF hears these voices clearly and takes them with the utmost seriousness.”

Major-General Kalouniwai stressed that the RFMF’s future direction is one of absolute honesty.

“However, the RFMF will not remain prisoners of its past. Instead, we are embracing a pivotal new trajectory—one defined by transparency, accountability, and a renewed partnership with every community across Fiji.”

The Commander said the RFMF is prepared to confront historical wrongdoing directly, not obscure it.

“Let it be clearly stated: our path of reconciliation is not an attempt to avoid accountability nor to circumvent any legal processes. Rather, it is a deliberate, public acknowledgment of past actions—an essential first step toward rebuilding the sacred trust of the people we are mandated to protect.”

He said healing requires courage, humility, and the willingness to confront difficult truths.

“The healing of our national wounds requires courage, honesty, and inclusive dialogue.”

Major General Kalouniwai said the RFMF stands ready to confront its legacy “beyond denial toward meaningful national renewal.”
