Drug use among young people in Fiji is on the rise—and it is deeply concerning.
In the past year, social media has been inundated with images and videos of adolescents engaging in substance use.
YouTubers captured footage of a Fijian individual who is purportedly involved in the distribution of drugs.
The situation has evolved from a period in which young people were actively engaged in constructive activities to a period in which many are unafraid to use drugs or confront juvenile detention or imprisonment, which is disheartening.
It is widely believed that the issue originates at home, where children require emotional support, guidance, and affection. Regrettably, certain children are born into families that are neglected or exploited.
There are those who contend that schools should be more involved in substance awareness programs. Who is genuinely responsible for the welfare of these young people?
I believe that congregational and municipal support is necessary for a "Sunshine Programme" for at-risk adolescents. In order to promote healing, communication, and connection, it is recommended that parents conduct consistent family sessions. These young individuals can develop greater resilience and health with the assistance of others.
