The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has imposed an immediate ban on all vessels under 15 metres from operating in areas affected by current severe weather warnings.
The authority said the restriction was necessary because hazardous marine conditions posed a significant threat to navigation, lives at sea and maritime property.
In a marine notice issued today, MSAF directed all shipowners, operators, masters, agents, mariners and the public to comply with the order while adverse weather conditions persist.

The ban applies to all vessels less than 15 metres in length, including commercial vessels, passenger ferries, fishing boats, recreational craft, small workboats and other small vessels.
According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, areas affected by the warnings include the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, the southern coast of Viti Levu from Natadola to Navua, Taveuni and nearby islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and surrounding islands.
A damaging heavy swell warning also remains in force for waters off southwest Viti Levu, Lau waters, the Koro Sea and the Kadavu Passage.
MSAF has urged vessel owners, operators and masters to closely monitor weather forecasts and warnings and remain alert to rapidly changing sea conditions.
Masters of vessels not covered by the restriction have also been advised to exercise caution, conduct risk assessments before departure and carefully consider whether voyages are necessary while the adverse weather continues.
The restriction will remain in force until the Fiji Meteorological Service cancels the Coastal Inundation Alert and Damaging Heavy Swell Warning, or until further notice is issued by MSAF.
“Mariners are reminded that the safety of life at sea remains paramount,” the authority said.
“Vessel masters are expected to exercise sound judgement and take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of their vessel, passengers and crew.”
MSAF warned that failure to comply with the marine notice could result in enforcement action under relevant maritime legislation.
Acting chief executive officer Sereana Lalakobau issued the notice.
