Koro High School’s (KHS) Open Grade girls’ netball team overcame financial challenges to compete at the 2026 Crest Fiji Secondary Schools Netball Championship at Jai Narayan College ground in Suva yesterday.
Speaking to SUNsports, head coach Lusiana Waqabaca said support from the island community helped the team make the trip to Suva.
“We had a lot of challenges, especially financial problems, but the support from our island made it possible for us to be here in Suva and that did not stop us from performing,” she said.
“We used those challenges as fuel and encouragement for our girls.”
Koro made a winning start, beating Swami Vivekananda College 14-8, but Waqabaca said there was still room for improvement.
“I think the girls need to improve on their defence, stepping and some of the weaknesses that we need to work on,” she said.
This is Koro’s third appearance at the competition, after first participating in 2024.
The school has three teams competing this year in the Under-14, U15 and Open Grade categories.
Waqabaca urged supporters to continue backing the teams throughout the tournament.
“We just need their prayers and their support. If they can make it to the Crest Fiji Secondary Schools Netball Championship at Jai Narayan College to support us, that will be very impressive,” she said.
“That will encourage us more to perform, especially when we have a crowd. It will boost the team’s performance if we have a lot of support with us.”
