Corrections officer accused of assault granted bail

A Natabua Corrections officer accused of assaulting an inmate has indicated his willingness to reconcile with the victim.
The Lautoka Magistrates Court yesterday set September 7 for reconciliation between Asaeli Sorovaki and the inmate he is accused of assaulting.
Sorovaki, who is accused of one count of assault, appeared before Magistrate Seini Puamau.

The charge follows a video clip dated June 14 that went viral on social media, allegedly showing Sorovaki assaulting an inmate at the Natabua Remand Centre.
Magistrate Puamau granted Sorovaki bail on a $1,000 non-cash bond.
As part of his bail conditions, Sorovaki was ordered not to interfere with the prosecution or the State’s case and was required to provide a fixed residential address.
The prosecution was represented by Sergeant Titilia Ului.
The matter was adjourned to September 7 for reconciliation, with the victim required to be present in court.
