The High Court has adjourned an application by former Fiji Sports Council chief executive officer Gilbert Vakalalabure for leave to challenge an internal board investigation and a demand for repayment of $196,750.

The matter was called before Justice Vishwa Dutt Sharma today, where lawyers discussed how the application should proceed.

Vakalalabure's lawyer, Tevita Vakalalabure, submitted that the application could be determined on the papers, arguing that it had already met the required legal threshold.

However, lawyer Ruth Garry, representing the Fiji Sports Council, opposed the proposal and sought a hearing to argue the application.

The court adjourned the matter to March 16, 2027, for mention.

In his application, Vakalalabure is challenging a board-led investigation into allegations of mismanagement and the unauthorised use of council funds.

He is also challenging a demand issued on July 3, 2026, requiring him to repay $196,750.

The former chief executive is seeking orders to quash the investigation report and its findings, claiming the process was unlawful and procedurally unfair.

He is also asking the court to prevent the Fiji Sports Council from enforcing the payment demand or distributing the report until the application is determined.
