Fiji is exploring a long-term partnership with China's Wuhan Technical University to strengthen technical education, skills training and workforce development.

A high-level delegation from the university visited Fiji from June 28 to July 2 at the invitation of the Ministry of Education.

Talks focused on expanding cooperation in technical and vocational education and training (TVET), artificial intelligence, tourism, engineering and other priority sectors.

The delegation was led by university president Baohua and included Director of Teaching Affairs Wen Zhenhua, Dean of the School of Artificial Intelligence Yi Haisheng, Dean of the School of Architectural Engineering Chen Jun, Director of the Information Office Meng Baohua and Director of International Relations Zhang Ziyi.

A key engagement during the visit was in Sabeto, where the delegation met Momo Levu na Tui Sabeto Ratu Viliame Mataitoga, Roko Tui Ba Iliesa Delasau, Betoraurau Education Trust chairman Don Natabe and Ministry of Education envoy Ratu Locoloco.

Discussions centered on practical cooperation in technical and vocational training, artificial intelligence, tourism and hospitality, infrastructure development, sports and youth programmes, and community-based workforce initiatives.

The delegation also received a traditional welcome hosted by the Tui Sabeto, highlighting the importance of cultural respect and community leadership in any future partnership.

Leaders also discussed Sabeto's development potential and how international education partnerships could create jobs, strengthen youth skills, support small businesses and contribute to long-term economic growth.

Stakeholders agreed that any future cooperation should align with Fiji's national priorities, local community needs and principles of transparency and sustainability.

Ratu Viliame said the visit recognised the importance of education and skills development.

"Their visit recognises the importance of respectful relationships, education and skills development, and the opportunity to explore partnerships that can support our people and future generations," Ratu Viliame said.

Mr Baohua said Wuhan Technical University remained committed to international cooperation.

"We value international cooperation and the opportunity to build understanding with communities and institutions in Fiji. We are pleased to discuss future education and training opportunities that may contribute to shared development and practical outcomes," Mr Baohua said.

Mr Delasau said the discussions highlighted opportunities for collaboration.

"There is strong potential to explore cooperation in technical training, emerging technologies and skills pathways that can benefit students, communities and future development initiatives," Mr Delasau said.

While no agreements have been announced, stakeholders said discussions would continue to identify specific projects and formalise areas of cooperation aimed at expanding education opportunities, strengthening skills development and supporting Fiji's future workforce.
