The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is urging the public to comply with tobacco laws, warning that offenders face serious penalties if found to be in breach.
In a public advisory issued on Thursday, the ministry reiterated that selling loose cigarette rolls was prohibited by the Tobacco Control Act 2010. Officials are relying on the community to not only follow the law but also report illegal tobacco sales to their nearest health centre.
"We encourage all Fijians to contribute to upholding health and safety regulations," the statement read.

The notice follows a targeted operation against illicit tobacco sales in the Central Division, carried out by the Ministry's Tobacco Enforcement Unit in partnership with the Fiji Police Force.
A tobacco seller, who was apprehended as a result of this operation, received a 100-day jail sentence by the Nausori Magistrate Court for failure to pay a $1,500 fine.
Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Kasiano Vusonilawe, emphasised that the health ministry was leading enforcement with the police acting in support.
"Enforcement is underway, but we have to follow up on the current response to these challenges," he said.
