Work has finally begun to dismantle the wreck of the Sinu-i-Wasa III, ending years of uncertainty over the vessel that has remained stranded in Levuka since Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston struck in 2016.
When the Fiji Sun visited the wreck site yesterday, workers were dismantling the vessel.
Owner Ben Naidu confirmed the work began two days ago, with workers cutting up the vessel from the inside.

"The men are working inside the boat to dismantle it," Mr Naidu said.
"So we have commenced cutting the boat up and that will be done until its completion."
The dismantling follows years of concern from residents and community leaders over the vessel, which has remained grounded on Levuka's foreshore since it was wrecked during Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston in February 2016.
The issue was again raised during the Lomaiviti Provincial Council meeting in May, when Levuka district representative Taniela Tamani said the abandoned vessel had become an eyesore and continued to pose environmental, safety and social concerns for nearby communities.
Council members also stressed the importance of removing the wreck because of Levuka's status as Fiji's first capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, saying its heritage, environment and marine resources should be protected.
Authorities had previously said the removal process was subject to legal and environmental requirements, including the completion of an Environmental Impact Assessment before dismantling or removal could proceed.
The Lomaiviti Provincial Council has called on the relevant authorities and stakeholders to work together to ensure the wreck is removed and the long-standing issue resolved.
