The Macuata rugby men’s side will play in next season’s Skipper Cup after a hard-fought 22-15 win over Tailevu 22-15 at Subrail Park, Labasa, on Saturday night.

Backed by their vocal supporters, the Voreqe Bainimarama-coached side did not disappoint with a gutsy performance.

For the Northerners, it was their third win of the season after earlier beating Nadi and Yasawa. They held Namosi to a 12-12 draw at Thomson Park, Navua.

Speaking to SUNsports, Bainimarama said the team has achieved their target of remaining in the Skipper Cup competition for another season.

I thank God Almighty and all our players and management for not giving up and retaining our Skipper Cup status, he said.

Emotionally moved by the success, Bainimarama, said the hype or pressure build-up towards the Tailevu game worked in their favour.

Tailevu captain, Laisenia Manuqila, congratulated Macuata on the win and commended them for a tough game with a good crowd backing.

However, Manuqila, remained proud of his team despite bringing a fairly young side to Labasa.

Tailevu still have a game to play before their season ends.

They take on Suva this weekend.
