Fiji wins Pacific Nations Cup opener at home

The Fiji Water Flying Fijians made a strong start to their Pacific Nations Cup campaign with a 32-10 victory over Tonga at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

The home side ran in four tries, while Tonga managed just one in the first half.

The visitors struck early in the second minute through halfback Augustine Pulu, with Patrick Pellegrini adding the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

Fiji responded in the 7th minute when Caleb Muntz slotted a penalty to close the gap to 3-7.

Soon after, second five-eighth Seta Tamanivalu powered over for Fiji’s opening try, converted by Muntz, to give the hosts a 10-7 advantage.

Winger Kalaveti Ravouvou extended Fiji’s lead with a try, making it 17-10 at the break.

The Flying Fijians tightened their defence in the second half, keeping Tonga scoreless while adding further points.

Muntz kicked a penalty in the 56th minute to push the lead to 20-10.

Captain Tevita Ikanivere then crossed for another try seven minutes later, stretching it to 27-10.

Debutant Taniela Rakuro made an immediate impact, diving over for his first try in national colours to seal the match at 32-10, with Muntz missing the conversion.

Fiji held firm until the final whistle to secure the win.

They now face Samoa next Saturday in Rotorua, New Zealand.
