Banking Assistance on the Horizon

Government engaging Reserve Bank before approaching commercial banks on possible support amid fuel cost pressures.

Banking customers maybe getting a little relief somewhere down the line.

This is in response to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka's earlier call for banks to help out their customers during the current global fuel crisis where fuel costs have increased.

Finance Minister Esrom Immanuel has held discussions with the Reserve Bank of Fiji about providing help.

He confirmed plans to later talk to the individual banks afterwards.

"We haven't gone down to the banks directly, but we have gone to Reserve Bank to provide some assistance. Then we will go down to all banks," Mr Immanuel told this masthead

Details on what the assistance is and how it could help banking customers has yet to be revealed.

Mr Rabuka had originally called on banks to help out their customers during these difficult periods, when he made his address on April 8.

"Some of us had arranged with our bankers to give us a period where we only paid interest on our loans. This is another time like those, when were arrange with our bankers to be nice to us as we navigate this difficult economic period," Mr Rabuka said at the time.

"And I encourage them to help us at a time like this."
