The redevelopment of Nausori International Airport has officially begun, with Government positioning the multimillion-dollar project as a key step in strengthening Fiji’s aviation network.
It is expected to boost economic growth and improve connectivity across the Pacific.
At the groundbreaking ceremony at Nausori Airport yesterday, Minister for Public Enterprises Charan Jeath Singh said the upgraded terminal would transform Nausori into a modern, efficient and passenger-focused facility.

“The project is not just about infrastructure, it is about strengthening the gateways that connect our people, our economy and our region,” Mr Singh said.
The airport serves about 400,000 passengers annually. It is Fiji’s second international gateway and plays a critical role in serving Suva, government operations, businesses and regional organisations.
The redevelopment comes as passenger numbers continue to rise, with existing facilities facing congestion and capacity challenges.
The new terminal will feature expanded departure and arrival areas, upgraded check-in and security systems, improved baggage handling and modern air-conditioned spaces.
Passengers can also expect improved accessibility, enhanced retail and food outlets, and upgraded amenities designed to improve the overall travel experience.
The $64 million runway extension now allows larger aircraft such as Boeing 737s to land at Nausori.
It forms part of a broader national strategy to reinvest Government dividends from Fiji Airports into aviation infrastructure.
Mr Singh said Fiji Airports remains one of the country’s strongest state-owned enterprises, playing a central role in tourism — one of Fiji’s key economic pillars — and in post-pandemic recovery.
He added that more than $2 billion will be invested in aviation infrastructure over the next decade, particularly at Nadi International Airport.
While acknowledging that not all airports are profitable, Mr Singh said Government remains committed to maintaining connectivity across the islands.
“Beyond economic benefits, the project is also expected to create jobs, improve operational efficiency and position Nausori as a competitive regional hub,” he said.
The redevelopment aligns with Fiji Airports’ push toward sustainability, with Nadi Airport already achieving Level Four carbon accreditation, placing it among leading global airports such as Narita International Airport and Sydney Airport.
The project reflects partnerships between Government, Fiji Airports and international development partners, signalling growing global confidence in Fiji’s aviation sector.
Once completed, the Nausori Airport terminal upgrade is expected to ease congestion, enhance passenger comfort and support long-term growth in tourism, trade and regional connectivity, reinforcing Fiji’s position as a key aviation hub in the Pacific.
