Student, 17, Charged With Assault, Causing Bodily Harm, Gets Bail

The complainant was allegedly assaulted by an unknown person inside the male toilet at the school and when he came out of the gate, he was allegedly called out by the accused who was standing outside with his friends.

A 17-year-old student from a school in Suva, charged with assault causing actual bodily harm, has been granted bail by the Magistrates Court in Suva.

The accused appeared before Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekara yesterday. It is alleged that the accused on February 14, 2020, at about 3pm near the school, the student assaulted the complainant, 17.

Both the accused and the student are from the same school.

The complainant was allegedly assaulted by an unknown person inside the male toilet at the school and when he came out of the gate, he was allegedly called out by the accused who was standing outside with his friends.

The complainant was said to have went to the accused and the accused allegedly punched the complainant on his face and he fell to the ground.

The accused then allegedly punched the back of the complainant’s head and kicked and punched the complainant’s stomach.

The complainant had received injuries on his forehead, upper and lower lips, neck, and side of the lower ribs as per the medical report. Police prosecutor Woman Police Constable, Kula Nainoca served full phase of disclosures.

She did not object to the bail and told the court that there was no domestic relationship between the accused and the complainant.

Magistrate Wickramasekara had granted bail to the accused on bail bond sum of $2000.

He said the matter was reconcilable as the accused and the complainant were not related.

The matter has been adjourned for mention on May 25.
