The $42 million Rev John Hunt Centre development in Suva is expected to be completed this year, marking one of the capital’s largest commercial investments in recent years.
The 10-storey mixed-use development, owned by the Methodist Church in Fiji and being constructed by Fortech Construction Company, is designed to provide modern office, retail and business spaces to boost economic activity in Suva’s central business district.
Architectural lead and project manager Ben Whippy said the project remains within its approved $42 million budget, despite challenges typically associated with large-scale developments.

“The project is currently operating within the approved $42 million budget, which is a strong outcome given the scale and complexity of the development,” Mr Whippy said.

He acknowledged the project had faced setbacks, including supply-chain disruptions, weather-related delays and unforeseen site conditions, but said these had been carefully managed.
The Rev John Hunt Centre is designed as a major commercial and community hub.
Once completed, the building will comprise eight storeys of office space and two levels of retail, including shops and a dedicated food court. Business and commercial activities will be located on the lower floors, with basement-level parking provided for tenants and visitors.
“The configuration of the building remains unchanged and is designed to support a wide range of commercial and community activities,” Mr Whippy said.
The scale of the project reflects a significant investment in Suva at a time when construction costs have risen due to inflation, supply-chain pressures and weather impacts. Despite these challenges, Mr Whippy said the development has remained financially on track.
The project is being delivered through a combination of client investment and institutional financing structured to support construction across the full project period.
Construction began after the foundation was laid in December 2023.
Mr Whippy said the project was largely led by local consultants, reflecting growing confidence in Fiji’s construction and professional services sector.
“This project demonstrates the depth of local capability we have in Fiji to deliver developments of this scale and complexity,” he said.
Once completed, the Rev John Hunt Centre is expected to house a wide range of businesses, retail operators and service providers, while creating employment opportunities during construction and after opening.
