A 44-year-old former school teacher facing 147 charges of obtaining a financial advantage by deception appeared before Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili at the Suva Magistrates Court in yesterday.

It is alleged that between January 1, 2012 and December 30, 2017, Merewai Tuiyauyau Nakalevu obtained $108,151.99 from the Ministry of Education by deception.

It is alleged that Nakalevu, while being on study leave, failed to inform the Ministry of Education of her leave and continued to receive her salary.

Police prosecutor Corporal Luke Qerewaqa served full phase disclosures.

He did not object to bail, but sought two suitable sureties and the imposition of strict bail conditions.

Chief Magistrate Ratuvili granted bail to the accused on the sum of $500. He also imposed a $500 bond on two sureties.

He ordered the accused not to change her residential address without the court’s permission, report to the Sigatoka Police Station every Wednesday and surrender any travel documents and passport to the court registry.

The Chief Magistrate also issued a stop departure order on the accused.

The matter was adjourned to May 27 for mention.
