Naivalurua credits joint Police-RFMF operations for 30% drop in drug crimes

Drug-related crimes decreased by 30 per cent in the first of the 2025-2026 financial quarter, says Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua.

Mr Naivalurua attributed this to the joint efforts of the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces in combatting crimes in Fiji, which began in February 2025.

“Enforcement alone is not enough. Success requires the support of all sectors, and we can only achieve it by working together,” Mr Naivalurua said.

Speaking during the Budget debate in Parliament, Mr Naivalurua welcomed the $226.5 million allocated to the Fiji Police Force, saying it would strengthen national security and public safety.

He said tackling illicit drugs remained one of government’s top priorities, with $1.6 million allocated to strengthening the National Counter Narcotics Bureau.

He informed Parliament that last year more than 2400 drug-related cases were reported in Fiji.

“This investment will strengthen the ministry’s ability to lead national security policy, policing reforms and Fiji’s digital transformation,” Mr Naivalurua said.

“Government remains committed to strengthening the legal framework to support effective, modern and affordable policing.”

Mr Naivalurua also welcomed funding to review policing legislation, including support for the Police Bill, which is before the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights.

“When enacted, the legislation will modernise policing by strengthening accountability, improving governance and providing a clear framework for professional policing,” he said.
