Since the inception of the Transformation International (Fiji) Livelihood Programme in 2016, more than 40 single mothers have been assisted
This is according to programme co-ordinator Laite Tuwai Nasau.
Transformation International (Fiji) is a non-government faith-based organisation based in Navutu, Lautoka which assists single mothers in need of shelter, while equipping them with income generation skills such as mat weaving, printing of traditional designs and sewing to name a few.

“There’s been about more than 40 women assisted through the livelihood programme, some women even came from Nadi, Tavua, Ba; the others were from Lautoka."
"We help single mothers because out of that small business they can provide for their children,” Ms Tuwai said.
“The main thing we do here is teaching women skills such jewellery making, sewing, flower planting and kesakesa to make a small business once they leave here.
“Many of these women are separated from their spouses and have nowhere else to go so they come here for shelter.”
She said the programme was currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however she was working on three projects which would be added to the livelihood programme once it resumes.
“So right now, I’m working on my stove making and handmade event decorations and the third one is flower planting; then I call the women again to start the programme and teach them how to do this since restrictions have eased now,” she said.
“This stove project, will be made of concrete and you can just put firewood inside to cook, but I have also collected some sand for the project Once it is set up, people won’t have to use gas or electricity to cook, this stove will do it all from baking to cooking and all you need is firewood.”
