Vika Wati was surprised to have received her portion of the inflation mitigation payment yesterday.

The 63-year-old said that this was her second year on the social welfare assistance and was appreciative of the assistance.

“I thank God for this Government,” she said.

“Though we have a small farm and backyard gardening; we are still being assisted by this government to help us in our other essential needs, needed at home like food,” she said.

Ms Wati, who lives alone at Tamavua, said the assistance would help getting the necessities she needs.

She added that everyone who receives similar assistance to use the cash wisely and budget it well so they don’t run out of it.

Nadi

In the West, Meigunya, Nadi, resident Mohammed Raja, is grateful for receiving the inflation mitigation assistance payment of $180 in addition to the existing $100 social pension assistance.

“I will buy some groceries and some of my medication,” he said.

The 70-year-old father of three said his wife doesn’t receive the social pension assistance.

“I have been praying all this time and I am so happy because I usually receive $100 but most of the time, I only withdraw $50 because I have to save the rest for my medication.

“Last month I had to borrow money from my daughter to buy my medication.”

She said the bus fare assistance was also of great assistance to her.

In an earlier statement the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar said: “Approximately $18million will be paid to more than 90,000 social welfare beneficiaries (recipients under the Social Pension Scheme, Poverty Benefit Scheme, Expanded Food Voucher for Rural Pregnant Mothers, Disability Allowance and Care and Protection Allowance) and around 8,000 Government pensioners and After-care recipients.”
