Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is encouraging households to grow their own food as a additional mechanism to manage the rising cost of living.
In his New Year message, Mr Rabuka said backyard gardening and small-scale farming would promote food security for families.
"Reduces household expenses and lowers Fiji's reliance on imported food." Mr Rabuka said.
"Every backyard garden helps ease the cost of living and keeps money circulating within our economy."
He also acknowledged the financial pressure many Fijian households face as the nation enters 2026.
Mr Rabuka said that global inflation and recent electricity tariff adjustments have placed additional strain on household budgets.
"Let me assure you: these decisions were not taken lightly.
"They are necessary to ensure the long - term sustainability, reliability, and expansion of our national power supply, including investment in renewable energy and rural electrification."
He said that the Government remains committed to working with the private sector , workers and communities to ensure that economic growth is felt where it matters most - in the homes of ordinary Fijians.
Mr Rabuka added that Government’s fiscal strategy will focus on responsible spending, prudent debt management, and inclusive growth to balance economic recovery with household wellbeing.
"As 2026 begins, Fijians must work together with faith, hope, and shared responsibility to overcome challenges and build a stronger, united nation".
