Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

On behalf of the Fijian Government and Fijian people, I extend our deepest condolences to all those who have lost loved ones and friends aboard the MV Butiraoi.

It is a particular tragedy for a nation the size of Kiribati, and the thoughts and prayers of every Fijian are with you at this time. May Almighty God take those who have lost their lives into his loving arms, and provide comfort to their families and all who knew them.

As you know, Fiji was able to render whatever assistance we could with the rescue effort, and we also stand ready to provide whatever assistance you may need with the investigation into the sinking.

This tragedy has struck a deep chord with Fijians and other Pacific Islanders. We are acutely aware of the vulnerability of all of us in the vast stretches of ocean that separate our islands, and we must all work together to ensure that our means of transport across the seas meet the highest safely standards.

I extend to you the solidarity and friendship of the Fijian people, and our assurance that you can always rely on Fiji–– especially in times of need.

Yours sincerely,

Voreqe Bainimarama

Prime Minister of Fiji
