A 54-year-old unemployed man facing sexual offence charges has been remanded in custody by the High Court in Suva.

The accused appeared before Judge Justice Daniel Goundar yesterday. He is charged with one count each of indecent assault and of rape. The alleged incidents have occurred on January 17, 2019, at Tailevu. The complainant in the matter is a nine-year-old girl.

State Prosecutor from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Setefano Komaibaba, told the court that the accused is the grandfather of the complainant.

He also told the court that the accused and the complainant live in the same village in Tailevu.

The matter was adjourned to May 27 for plea.
