A significant rift has erupted within SODELPA, leaving members bewildered as the former general secretary demands an apology for what he asserts are baseless accusations made against him in 2023.

The dispute has spilled over onto social media, where Lenaitasi Duru is publicly accusing Social Democratic Liberal Party and its general secretary; Viliame Takayawa, of numerous alleged violations of the party constitution.

In March 2023, party vice-president Anare Jale informed the media that Mr Duru was no longer the general secretary, alleging the misappropriation of $26,000 from parliamentary grants allocated to the party.

The party claimed to have reported the matter to the police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further inquiry.

However, despite Mr Takayawa providing a report number for the complaint, the police had not confirmed an active investigation.

Recently, Mr Duru revealed he had followed up with SODELPA in last September, requesting either factual evidence supporting the allegations or an apology for the statements made by Mr Jale in the media.

As of yesterday, there has been no response from SODELPA.

Addressing accusations that he is influenced by members of the former government to tarnish the party’s reputation, Mr Duru challenged such claims, stating: “Come to me with evidence of your claims or shut up.”

He emphasised that his sole request from the party was either evidence substantiating their accusations or a formal apology.

When asked about the party’s position, General Secretary Mr Takayawa said: “For now, all I can say is for Mr Duru to await the investigation.

“I cannot comment further because the investigation is ongoing.”
