Distorted Mary Magdalene movie
Kelepi Lesi, President, Catholic League South Pacific Region
Despite the beautiful story of a noble woman according to the Holy Scriptures, the script writer’s somehow failed to honestly tell viewers, as it was. Unfortunately, the producer cynically exploited the viewers assumption of retelling it’s Biblical story, when actually it’s a Hollywood version and not the Bible version.

Reading between the lines, from the synopsis and footage provided, the film has a strong feminist bent, to women empowerment with a feminism agenda on liberation theology.
Hence, Hollywood failed to find a drama or chemistry between Phoenix and Miss Mara from the ‘greatest’ story ever told to the ‘dullest’ story ever screened.
We are deeply saddened that the movie director, Gareth Davies, distorted the Holy Scriptures with deception and insidious lies, to falsely portray one of the sacred beliefs of Catholics and Christians alike. The best for lent is to avoid the movie.
Know yourself
Hassan Ali, Lautoka
Know yourself. This saying of the wise applies to modern times as well.
Through self knowledge a man can easily resolve many difficulties and problems encountered even of health and relationships. So do take an interest in yourself and find the way. You will if you seek sincerely.
The world will be a better place to live in.
Student behaviour
Dhirendra Prasad, Lautoka
It is becoming a very sad trend to blame others for the bad behaviour of our own.
The latest is the case where students vandalised buses and displayed sick minds in the making. The simple comment I would like to make is that if your child is not behaving well, blame yourself. No one else can shape the mentality of the child, but it is you and the home environment you have created. It is time to reflect, and re-think about the home circumstances where our young minds are exposed to abuse, neglect, arrogance and violence from the very time they are born.
What we practise at home shapes the young minds.
None of these children would misbehave at school at such a level because they are kept well controlled by teachers. It is only outside the school premises that they get the confidence to take ill mannered steps.
Please parents, take care of your children who are your products biologically, spiritually and physically with added elements of mentality.
Leave the academic learning and the shaping the career paths of students to the teachers, but take ownership of your failure if applicable.
By the way, isn’t it time to stop all competitions for schools and concentrate in the numeracy and literacy skills of our students?
Leave these competitions to the relevant authorities that may also include the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Leave the schools alone. I know this will create pains, but this is the way.
