A Fijian rugby player has died in Japan after suffering suspected heatstroke following a training session, his club Kyuden Voltex has announced.
According to BBC News, 26-year-old Saimoni Vunilagi was taken to hospital after displaying symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke following team training on Monday, August 3. He died on Friday, August 7.
Kyuden Voltex, which competes in Japan's second division and is based in Fukuoka, confirmed the news in a statement.

"After team practice on Monday, 3 August 2026, Saimoni displayed symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke. He was transported to a medical facility for treatment, but despite the best efforts of the medical team, he sadly passed away," the club said.
Temperatures in the southern Japanese city of Fukuoka have reached 35 degrees Celsius this week.
The club said players and staff were devastated by the sudden loss.
"The players, staff, and all team associates are devastated by this sudden news."
Vunilagi had only recently joined Kyuden Voltex after signing with the club last month. He previously played for Japan Rugby League One side Tokyo Sungoliath.
"Although Saimoni had only recently joined Kyushu KV, his generous spirit and powerful style of play had raised high hopes for his contributions in the upcoming season."
The club extended its condolences to his family and requested privacy during their time of grief.
"We humbly pray for the repose of his soul and extend our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family.
"At this time of profound grief, we respectfully ask the family be granted space and privacy."
According to BBC News, the 1.96-metre, 117-kilogram back-row forward attended university in Japan and began his professional rugby career in 2023.
Japan Rugby League One also paid tribute to Vunilagi.
"We express our heartfelt condolences upon receiving the news of the passing of Saimoni. We offer our deepest condolences to the bereaved family and all those involved," the organisation said.
