The Kadavu women’s rugby team faces a mammoth task as they face host Suva in tomorrow’s Subrail’s Marama Championship semifinal at the HFC Bank Stadium.

Kadavu women captain Vatiseva Cavuru told SUNsports their journey has been tough.

It’s all about hard work, making sacrifices and holding on to their faith,” she said.

The Kadavu women’s side scored an upset 31-29 win over Nadroga in their quarterfinal clash at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, last Saturday.

“To reach this far means a lot to us and our supporters,” she said.

“It took a lot of sacrifice, challenges faced concerning our meals. Sometimes we were overcome with emotions. There were days the girls cried together because training was tough, but we never gave up.”

Cavuru said the team’s focus was to make the people of Kadavu proud and to show that hard work and faith always pay off.

“We thank the Lord for reaching the semifinal. We went through a lot to reach this point,” she said.

The Kadavu captain also acknowledged their coaches and team officials for their guidance and extended her gratitude to Kadavu Rugby Union president Lynda Tabuya for her continued support throughout the season.

“Our coaches and president believed in us right from the start. We’re thankful for their faith and encouragement. Despite the win over Nadroga, there are still areas to improve on before the semi-finals. We went back and worked on our scrums and a few other things.”

Meanwhile, the Nasinu women’s side takes on Namosi in the other semifinal on Saturday.

Nasinu women’s captain Ruth Raketekete said she always reminded her players to always work together.

“That’s the only way to win,” she said.

Raketekete said despite winning the quarterfinal against Naitasiri on a big scoreline of 62-15 they are not carried away with it.

“There were areas we need to improve on before the semi-final. We had some miscommunication on the ground that affected our defence.

“Also we lost a few balls because of that”

Raketekete said they are looking forward to carry on their winning momentum into the semifinal aiming to finish what they’ve started.
