The Macuata women's rugby team is calling for support as they countdown to the kick off of the Marama Cup competition on August 1.

Head coach Motu Lalagavesi said qualifying to the top women's competition was not easy with financial constraints.

"We don't get much from the Macuata Rugby Union - it does not cover all expenses for the team," Lalagavesi said.

"Most of our team members are students and are unemployed so we find ways to fundraise our trips to Viti Levu and return."

They have begun fundraising two weeks ago with a BBQ sale where they collected $ll00.

"Each team member volunteered to contribute whatever they can, and we raised a good amount of money to help us prepare for the season," Lalagavesi said.

She is urging the people of Macuata in Fiji and abroad if they could contribute in any way.

"This is not just our team - it's the team for the van.ua of Macuata."

The women's side secured their place in the Marama Cup after qualifying to the final of the Royal Tea Ranadi at Lawaqa Park while the men's side has been demoted to the Vodafone Vanua championship this year.

"Our squad this year is not the same team that qualified us; many have left to look for jobs and have settled down with their families.

"We are trusting our squad and can't wait to take on Namosi in our opening match."

She added they will also play without their number one hooker Basilisa Tagibau in this year's Marama Cup competition.

Tagibau was one of the key players who helped promote the side from the Royal Tea Ranadi Cup.

She passed away on June 27 after a short illness, leaving behind a two-month-old daughter.
