Serua Rugby Union (SRU) is targeting a place in this year’s Vodafone Vanua Cup final, with today’s clash against rivals Namosi expected to provide an early measure of the side’s title ambitions.
The two teams meet at Thomson Park in Navua today.
Vice-president Penaia Latianara said the team had prepared well and was eager for the challenge.
“The players have been in camp since last week and are looking forward to the match against our rivals, Namosi,” Latianara said.
He expects a tough contest after the two sides met in a warm-up match last week.
“Our coaches have been working closely with the players on the game plan. We have focused on improving our breakdown work and ensuring we are ready to match Namosi.”
Latianara said Serua’s main objective this season is to qualify for the Vanua Cup final.
“Our goal is to play good rugby and reach the final this year.”
Despite the team’s preparations, he said limited facilities continued to pose a challenge.
“One of our biggest challenges is the lack of proper training facilities. We have not been able to train on a suitable rugby ground, but the players have remained committed and focused.”
He has also encouraged fans and supporters to turn out in numbers.
“I would like to invite all our families, supporters and the vanua of Serua to come in numbers and support the boys,” he added.
