Health Minister Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu has assured the public that dengue patients admitted to hospitals will receive care, despite concerns over medicine shortages.

“If you are admitted, yes, you will be given the treatment that you need,” he told Parliament.

The statement followed a question from Rinesh Sharma, who asked if patients would need to “run to a pharmacy” for medication.

Dr Lalabalavu said early detection was key and dengue was treated like other viral illnesses.

“The main thing is to ensure that the public are aware of the signs and symptoms and get treatment early.”

MPs also raised alarm over reports that Aspen is no longer supplying free medicine to outpatient clinics.

“It is mandatory, and Aspen is legally binded to provide this service,” said Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj.

The Speaker ruled the matter out of scope, but the issue has intensified scrutiny of public health services as dengue cases near 11,000.
