The culinary team at Sheraton Resort & Spa, Tokoriki Island, Fiji, in the Mamanuca Group, had something truly special planned to mark International Chef’s Day.

In celebration of the day, which is observed annually on October 20, and in the spirit of giving back, the chefs travelled to Yanuya Island today to prepare and host a heartfelt lunch for the 175 school children of Mamanuca Primary School.

Executive chef Joshua Seed said it was a moment to connect through food, laughter, and community island-style.

“This day is very important for us at Sheraton Tokoriki, as a lot of our staff are from this village,” Mr Seed said.
“Our resorts would not run without their support. It’s just a time for us to give back to the kids and also for my team to do some community work.”

He added that more collaboration is underway, including the painting of a classroom last month.

Head Teacher Suliasi Vetaukula said it was great to meet the chefs and experience the beauty of giving through gastronomy.

“We thank the team from Sheraton Tokoriki for coming and celebrating with us. It’s important to note their role, as our village is surrounded by top-end resorts,” he said.

“Many of the children’s parents work there, and in the future, who knows, some of these kids may be inspired to become chefs themselves.”

Year Four student Manasa Rakatoni was overwhelmed by the experience and shared his dream of becoming a chef.

“This is a great lunch. We usually hear about the food from our parents and cousins,” he said.
