From school dropout to businessman, Labasa entrepreneur, Ilai Lomaloma, believes that the success of his business means turning failures into opportunities.

Mr Lomaloma is a recipient of the Ministry of Youth’s $5,000 business start-up.

What began as a dream more than 10 years ago has now translated into a thriving business based from home.

Mr Lomoloma is the director of Matata Production, a video production start-up and is one of the first youths from the Northern Division to provide sound systems, stage lights, studio recordings, video shooting, visual projection and professional photography services.

The father of three did not stop when he failed in Year 12.

He is self-taught thanks to technological guidance from YouTube videos.

He married his high school sweetheart from Vatoa, Lau, when he was 21 years old, and is neither a consumer of alcohol or kava.

Over the years he has expanded his business and is also printing t-shirts and designing fabrics.

Below is an excerpt interview with Mr Lomaloma.

How many places have you visited around Fiji?

I have been to all the towns and cities except my wife’s village, Vatoa Island, in the Lau group.

I have also taken my family to InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa at Natadola Bay, Wailoaloa Beach Resort Fiji at Nadi Bay and Daku Resort in Savusavu.
