Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka said a Central Project Management Unit had been established to manage the US$200 million (FJ$447m) Vanua Levu tourism project.

Mr Gavoka made this revelation while delivering his ministerial statement in Parliament yesterday.

Last June, the World Bank approved the financing of $447m for a 10-year multiphase programmatic approach to tourism development in Vanua Levu.

Mr Gavoka said this was on highly concessional terms through the International Development Association (IDA) and such a project needed a management unit.

“Under our ministry, a Central Project Management Unit is in place to manage the day-to-day project activities,” Mr Gavoka said.

“The unit includes the project manager and three personnel who have been appointed for the daily operations of the project.”

Mr Gavoka said the project would support continued intra-government coordination through a project steering committee, consisting of key Government and private sector representatives.

“This is an extremely important programme and we are excited to see it unfold over the next few years,” he said.
