Government is in a process of securing 100,000 blank passports to cater for the demand and customer outcry regarding the delay in disbursement of passports.

Outside Parliament yesterday, Minister for Immigration Pio Tikoduadua said the initial order was 40,000.

Mr Tikoduadua said the past administration had negotiated an agreement of 40,000 blank passports.

That contract was coming to an end this year while the Government opts to make adjustments to the supply.

The issuance for passports will be made in emergency cases only, that is, those who need it most, he said.

“Almost everyone wants to get a job opportunity overseas, that’s why a passport becomes handy. It is only a temporary measure; we do not want to run out of passports,” he said.

“Fiji is running on the last sets of the 40,000 that were acquired.”

The new sets of passports are expected to arrive next month.
