The New Year’s Eve street party returned to Labasa after a lapse of five years, drawing close to 200 people to the Labasa bus stand on Wednesday night.

The event, last hosted by the Labasa Town Council five years ago, featured a vibrant mix of Indo-Fijian and i-Taukei residents celebrating together.

The lively atmosphere was filled with island and Bollywood music, with various dance performances.

Prominent Labasa resident and former champion coach of the Labasa men’s football team, Bal Sanju Reddy, acknowledged the town council’s efforts in bringing the community together for the special occasion.

Mr Reddy said the initiative was timely, noting that Labasa had limited recreational activities for residents.

“I think this is a positive development, and one which we residents hope continues during every festive period,” he said.

Commenting on multiracial unity between Indo-Fijians and i-Taukei, Mr Reddy said the street party was more than just a one-day celebration, but a reflection of promoting peace and unity in the community.

Extra Supermarket was one of the sponsors of the street party.

“This street party helped build healthy co-existence between both races,” he said.

Mr Reddy also criticised certain social media commentators for spreading racially divisive remarks, advising the public not to support or entertain such views.

He added that he attended the event to usher in the New Year with his wife, as his children were in Suva.

“I hope the street party and this love shine throughout the year, and despite many struggles, we in the friendly north continue to put a smile on,” he said.

Council Special Administrator Chairperson, Paul Jaduram, said the celebration was a reminder of the Vualiku spirit of sharing love and compassion among all residents of Labasa.

“We want the people of Labasa to use this day to reflect on their actions and promote peace, unity and prosperity in their communities,” Mr Jaduram said.

He added that similar festivities would continue under his leadership, but urged business houses in Labasa to collaborate and support the organisation of such community events.
