Search for a vehicle which is believed to be submerged in the Rewa River, had to be suspended yesterday because of strong currents.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that the Police Special Response Unit divers had to temporarily suspend their operations.

“The team made one attempt, but due to the strong currents and poor visibility the search turned out negative,” she said.

“The strong current is also impacting the search efforts and a decision has been made to temporarily call off any dive expeditions for the safety of the officers.”

While it was earlier believed that there were four people in the vehicle, Ms Naisoro said no reports for missing persons have been received other than the mother who came forward.

Rehana Ali of Kasavu in Naitasiri came forward about her 18-year-old son Tasleem Ali who is believed to have been driving the missing vehicle.

Mr Ali allegedly lost control of the vehicle he was driving along Baulevu Road on Wednesday morning before it plunged into the Rewa River.

Ms Ali said they have also not received any information about any other missing person in their area.
